About Spickle

Rigour from A to Z

Behind Spickle is Cíntia A., a translator with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the University of Coimbra, who has been translating professionally since 2016.

A good translation does more than swap words from one language into another: it conveys the same message, with the same rigour and the same effect. That is Spickle’s commitment on every project — from a simple certificate to a complex contract.

With a particular focus on the legal field, we work with law firms, notaries, banks, insurers and public bodies, always in the strictest confidence.

Our philosophy

A communication is in plain language if its wording, structure, and design are so clear that the intended readers can easily find what they need, understand what they find, and use that information.

Vocabulary challenge

Do you know how to translate these words into Portuguese?

Three English legal terms that look simple — but whose Portuguese translation depends on context.

Select a card to reveal the answer.

  1. Undertaking

    • Compromisso ou obrigação assumida — a commitment given to a court or to another party
    • Empresa — in EU competition law
    • Empreendimento, projeto — in everyday language

In contracts and court proceedings, the most common meaning is ‘compromisso’.

  2. Deed

    • Escritura — deed of sale: escritura de compra e venda
    • Título — title deed: título de propriedade
    • Ato, feito — in everyday language

Under English law, a deed is a formal document with its own specific signing requirements.

  3. Injunction

    • Providência cautelar — interim injunction
    • Ordem judicial de fazer ou de não fazer (medida inibitória) — a court order to do, or refrain from doing, something

Watch out: in Portugal, an ‘injunção’ is a debt-collection procedure — a false friend!

These are legal terms, so their translation can vary depending on the context in which they are used!
